Lean 6 - YellowVision Advises Cable/Satellite Companies to Offer Free Channel Packages

Everyday there is an increase of people switching from their paid subscribed channels to various Internet options. In order for the people to use the alternate solutions, they must have an Internet provider to supply bandwidth. While cable and satellite companies are battling each other to hold on to channel viewing customers, cell phone companies are getting closer to taking over the bandwidth business. Verizon and AT&T currently offer competitive packages for Internet/Phone/cable/satellite. The luxury the cell phone corporations have is that they have several other products and services to rely on for capital as cable/satellite subscriptions continue to decline. So what should cable/satellite do to prevent themselves from being wiped out of the industry?

First, offer movie channels for free (ie. Showtime/HBO/CineMax etc..) This would be with limited commercial programming of course to make up for the loss in income this will cause. People of the world enjoy options. If they want commercial free programming, then charge a fee for that option. This one change will immediately stop the trend of subscribers jumping ship to Internet alternatives. Some people do not mind commercials, others can fast forward through commercials after recording.

Second, take the lead as a bandwidth provider. Open up the pipelines to support robust usage at affordable prices. Level the playing field; Cell phone companies have a lot more to offer customers, plus offering several services that can be grouped in one bill, one provider. Following these two steps makes cable/satellite sexy again, a must have service. Customers will not mind splitting up subscriptions if the cable satellite companies are offering a free service.  With an awesome marketing campaign that shows cable/satellite freeing channels from paid subscriptions. Just give a heads up so we can buy some stock in Cox/DirectTv/etc....as customers switch in droves and actually increase profit by offering the free channels and charge for VIP services.

This idea covers two types of customers; those who are spend thrifty and those who like to spend money. Cable/satellite companies will capitalize on both customers while changing the gloomy future for the current cable/satellite business model. AT&T and Verizon will have no choice but to follow suit, however cable/satellite companies will take the lead in the industry. Win/Win! Stay tuned for future article on how to keep cell phone giants at the heels of cable/satellite services.
