I have been a fan of Godiva for many years. I still have my membership card that allowed me to obtain one free piece of chocolate each month. Once in the store, I could not avoid purchasing a few items especially during a holiday month. With such great marketing strategy, i was shocked to hear the Chocolatier was beginning to close down store locations. I believe shutdowns can continue, however I think they should also look at some rebranding ideas. E-Commerce giant Amazon owns Whole Foods supermarket chain. Godiva needs to works a deal with Amazon to have a small manned kiosk at each supermarket location. This keeps the Godiva brand visible and more available as home deliveries are becoming increasingly popular. Who will be able to resist ordering some premium chocolates along with their groceries. Godiva can also setup shop in other high end Supermarkets such as Fresh Market, Wegmans, and Trader joes to name a few. The membership marketing can continue not only luring in customers for their free chocolate once a month, but also into the partnering high end supermarkets, where the customers are likely to purchase other items while at the store. Just some sweet treats for thought.
